I don't believe that Iran has a powerful military:
Iran is a developing country, and one that is also under sanctions.
Developing countries are only militarily effective if they have the support of a highly developed industrialized country. They would have to receive military equipment and the associated training.
After all, Iran has - in the past- never fought against a highly developed industrialized country.
