The transfer was carried out using an airport catering truck. Air Force One then departed separately with senior White House officials and members of the press aboard, serving as a decoy. Trump and a small group of aides left Turkey on the smaller aircraft.
Trump confirmed the aircraft switch on Wednesday, saying the decision was made on the advice of the Secret Service. He also said the alternative aircraft may have faced a greater risk than Air Force One.
The operation remained secret until reports about the unusual flight arrangements emerged this week.
