He was charged with engaging in counter-revolutionary activities. On August 2, 1938, he was sentenced to five years' labor camp. He came to a transit camp near Vladivostok in the Far East, and he managed to tell his wife to send some warm clothes, but he did not receive them. Officials said his death was due to an "unknown disease". He died of cold and starvation.
